IN CONVERSATION WITH...TRAIANOS PAKIOUFAKIS

CH: We recently collaborated on a shoot in the Lancelin sand dunes (which apparently are being relocated/migrated?). The shoot looked like no fashion photography shoot I have ever seen in a WA location let alone an Australian one, in a good way. What do you think of WA and Australian photography at the moment and the use of Australian landscapes in fashion shoots?

TP: Good question. The dunes at Lancelin are incredible, I was equally in awe of them from the moment we arrived through until the sun went down. It was risky to shoot there as it has been used so many times as a fashion location however everything I've seen shot there looks beachy. I tried to make it look like the unique world it is and I think it worked. I think Australia has a very unique quality of sunlight and most Australian photographers try to cover it up by bringing in additional lighting unnecessarily. Australian photographers like Leon Bird will show you your daily world in a way you've never seen, without bullshit technological tricks. Additionally, I have no idea how they're going to relocate that many grains of sand.

CH: What made you want to be a photographer? And although you don't consider yourself a 'fashion' photographer, what do you like/hate about it?

TP: I think I am just interested in print. For a long time I have just stared at magazines or product packaging and studied the quality of the printing. I think I am primarily interested in fashion because it's the one area of image making where it acceptable to use grain/noise and to push communication boundaries. Using available light is very important to me. These days I see too much hyperreal/HDR work where everything is razor sharp. I'm more interested in the unpredictable magic of working on the edge of technology.

CH: You keep avoiding the questions! I don't think I've asked you this yet, but what were your top 5 albums of 2009?

CH: Who would be your dream person to photograph? actor/model/musician/friend/person you have never met before…?

TP: Woah. Vincent Gallo, Lindsay Lohan, Oren Ambarchi.

CH: If you could ask yourself a question in an interview what would it be and what would be your response?

TP: Q: Do you realise your fascination with arrogance makes you come across poorly?
A: Yes.
